Even after decades of freedom, India is struggling to provide basic health services to its people. According to government sources, in India 45 children die every hour due to respiratory infections. 1 child dies every 2 minutes due to diarrhoea. And annually, about 2 million children under 5 years of age die due to preventable diseases.

The situation calls for timely care and diagnosis which can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality especially among children and women.

Helpkash Health Camps is one such special initiative of Helpkash India Charitable Society to provide healthcare services to meet the immediate health care needs of the marginalized community in remote rural areas and slums through standalone camps. Customized health camps are organized extensively across the country offering comprehensive health services – curative, preventive, primitive and referral, to a large number of people in selected intervention areas.

Multi-disciplinary projects include gynecological, pediatric, ophthalmology and surgical services etc., whereas other interventions can be general in nature. Duration of Health Camps vary between one day and 15 days with frequencies ranging between a month and a year.

The uniqueness of the model lies in its comprehensive approach where health promotion and prevention are given equal importance while curative care is administered.

Our associated Hospital Hakim Sonaullah Cancer Center is a rural cancer centre in the heart of North Kashmir. The Centre is part of the Hakim Sanaullah Specialist Hospital and aims at providing quality cancer care to the neglected rural population in the region. Currently the centre provides Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Diagnostic/Imaging services. The centre is part of a global effort towards managing cancer in a limited resource setting. Over two-thirds of Kashmiris live in rural areas with access to a health care system marred by deficiencies. An overburdened urban health care setup adds to the misery of these rural millions. Hakim Sanaullah Specialist Hospital & Cancer Centre is an effort to overcome these deficiencies. The institution is a tertiary health care facility with the first rural cancer centre of the Jammu and Kashmir, located in the heart of rural North Kashmir at Sopore, and catering to a population of over 1 million. By providing quality health care, accessible and affordable to these millions, the institution aims at changing the landscape of health care services in the region in particular and the state as a whole. By building strategic partnerships- international and national, we are working towards providing health care that is up to date and advanced, yet conscious of the financial limitations of a ‘third world’ population. In an attempt to bridge the gap between recent advances and resource limitations, the institution is actively involved in research and CME programmes aimed at developing protocols for management of diseases in resource limited settings worldwide. Because every life matters.

By the Grace of Allah, Hakim Sanaullah Specialist Hospital and Cancer Centre has been putting a significant effort in improving health care in the region and in the state as a whole. Much however needs to be done.
The following is a brief list of what we will need and what we want as part of our vision for HSSH & CC as an international standard health care institution in the heart of rural north Kashmir.

GRADE I – Priority Needs.

  1. Maternity & Child Health Care
Maternity & Child Health Care is a priority health concern not only for us but the whole region. The setting up of a quality maternity service is thus a priority with us. Here is what we need to do so:
Baby Incubators, Baby Warmers, Ventilators, Suction Devices, Electronic Fetal Monitors.
  2. Ophthalmology
Setting up a strong opthalmology unit is an important need in the region considering the fact that the regional prevalence continues to be above 1%, much higher than one what is found in several developed countries.
  3. EquipmentBio-microscope, Phacoemulsion Unit, IOL’s for poor patients.
  4. ICU
The region lacks a well equipped ICU, making this a priority need for the population. Setting up of a well equipped Intensive Care Unit is a priority with HSSH & CC.
Equipment: Ventilators, Monitoring equipment, Infusion Pumps, Defibrillator.
  5. Radiology.
Currently the radiology department has only basic investigation facilities -a 300 MA X Ray unit and USG. Patients requiring CT Scan are forced to travel to Urban areas, resulting in inconvenience and financial strain. Establishing a CT Scan plant is thus a priority with HSSH & CC as there is none in the region as of today. There is also no mammography unit in the region and with an increasing incidence of breast cancer, the need is real.
  6. Equipment: Spiral CT Scan Unit, Mammography Unit.
  7. Laboratory Services
The major deficiency in this department is that of a pathology service. The establishment of a pathology service is greatly dependant on the availability of an experienced and efficient pathologist. There is no dearth of such individuals in the valley, but the rural location of the hospital is a deterrent to many.
Equipment could then include digital microscopy that allows histology slide pictures to be emailed/digitally sent to pathologists daily while trained staff at HSSH & CC carry out tissue slicing and the preparation of slides or smears. Also, we believe there is an increasing requirement for tumour markers.
    Hakim Sanaullah Cancer Centre.
After the establishment of its medical oncology services and basic surgical oncology services, Hakim Sanaullah Cancer Centre is set to enter Phase II. This would include upgrading the surgical services, which is largely dependant on upgrading support services such as ICU, Laboratory, etc.
A pivotal component of Phase II is the setting up of a Radiotherapy Unit- A Linear Accelerator or Cobalt 60.
There is none for the over 1.5 million people in the region and patients are forced to utilize the overburdened radiotherapy units in Srinagar and outside the state.
Equipment Radiotherapy Unit (Linear Accelerator/Cobalt 60).

Grade II

The rural population is a complex one- growing and evolving, and in doing so presenting new health problems with dynamic economic challenges. We too are only beginning to understand the mechanics of delivering ‘quality health care, accessible and affordable to all’. Nevertheless, there are some services we envision our institution as providing within the next 8 years, Allah Willing:

  1. A full fledged Maternity and Child Health network with antenatal clinics reaching the farthest of areas, promoting health care and preventing disease.
  2. Mobile Ophthalmology units covering the whole northern area, with complex surgeries being carried out at a central centre at HSSH&CC.
  3. A fully automated modern laboratory.
  4. An expanded ICU service, greater number of inpatient beds, and another theatre block with laporoscopic/robotic surgery facilities.
  5. An MRI/PET Scan.
  6. Hakim Sanaullah Cancer Centre Phase III- A state of the art, fully equipped Cancer Centre with a strong ancillary back up. A strong cancer network reaching out to the population significantly carrying out screening, educational and early diagnostic services.
  7. Specialist training Courses in a wide range of branches.

Grade III

We believe the future will present new problems- complex, intricate and challenging. Allah tells us in the Holy Quran-“…and if anyone had saved one life, it would be as if he had saved the life of the whole people…” (Holy Quran 5:32).

We stand today on this platform, grateful to Allah for having given us the opportunity to serve Him and strive in His Cause. Truly without Him, HSSH & CC would not be possible, not even in our imagination.
We pray to Allah SWT, who Has Guided us by His Grace, that He show us the straight way always. Our vision for the future is that of His Service, selfless and sincere. Whatever the challenges the future presents before us small or great, we shall, by His Grace, face them and strive in His Cause- bringing relief and mercy to mankind. And in doing so we shall always remember-every life matters.
And All Praise is for Allah-Lord of the Worlds.
